It can be tempting to believe that once a person has experienced mistreatment, they will recognize and avoid mistreating others. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work that way. 

#MeToo founder Tarana Burke recently admitted that she “still cringe[s]” when she thinks about how she responded to her child Kaia, who came out as non-binary at age 12 or 13. She told a reviewer that while raising Kaia is her biggest success in life, not supporting Kaia when they first came out was her biggest failure. Clearly, she’s corrected the error now.
