Music is a powerful tool for regulating emotions. When we’re alone in the car, or wearing headphones on the bus, what songs do we use to release pent-up tears, or let out our rage, or remember an important moment with a loved one? Sometimes music moves us in ways that words alone can’t.
We can also use music to move through or shift our emotions. When we’re “stuck” in a place of high-intensity emotion, music can help us soothe and calm down, bringing us into a cooler and more restful state. The particular songs that work for us might vary a lot, but sharing the music that moves us can help us to connect with others – and share emotional regulation tools!
At a recent FORGE event, as part of our Emotional Care Workshop Series, we asked participants to share songs that helped them “slow down.” Folks shared songs across all genres – some instrumental, some uplifting, some from familiar childhood shows. We invite you to listen to this collaborative playlist and see how your emotions move, or intensify, or stay the same. After listening, what songs would you add to remind yourself of in “revved up” moments and share with someone else? Let us know on Instagram, Facebook, or Bluesky!
